Painters of American Life: “The Eight” men of the rebellion

As if read aloud in the present the artists of “The Eight” stated: “Art is not academic. Art is democratic”. They were scorned by academics, the press and some of the cultural elite but not by the people. At the first exhibition of their work the “gallery scarcely opened in the morning before the crowd begins to arrive”. In the gallery below are examples of the works on display at the Macbeth Gallery during the exhibition. One must note each artist had their own style lending nothing to other or to an overall theme.  Each artist’s work stood on it’s own merit.

Other archival items have been embedded in the gallery as well. Please enjoy!
